Mercedes is a jewellery & accessories designer from Colombia.
She is known for her statement pieces and colour splashes.
After studying artisanal and contemporary jewellery in Mexico, she launched her eponymous brand in 2001.
For the past 21 years, Mercedes has dedicated herself to representing Colombian roots through handmade jewellery and decorative objects, creating products that tell stories, carry a message and honour the hands of their makers. Each piece of jewellery, accessory and homeware is unique and authentic. Designed with care and talent, these pieces carry with them the sound of the wind, the smell of the mountains, the sparkle of the cosmos and the warmth of the sun from Latin America.
Mercedes collaborates with over 200 Colombian craftsmen and indigenous communities from Usiacuri, Putumayo, Nariño and Guajira who, from generation to generation, maintain ancestral craft techniques and bring to the world of fashion and decoration a proposal full of creativity and meaning.
After being sketched, the designs are transformed by hand into a metallic structure in the Bogotá workshop “La Casa de Mercedes”, before being sent to Usiacuri to be woven. The artisans then give shape and colour to the natural straw using ancestral craft techniques taught to them by their elders. The weaving pattern varies from region to region, as does the texture of the palm, giving each piece its own unique character.
