We have been praising the beauty and sustainability of the Raffia collection in our store.
But what is Raffia and how are these products made??
Raffia is a natural material, which is made from a palm tree.
To produce raffia fibres, the leaves are cut vertically from the tree and dried in the sun.
This turns the green strands into beige ribbons.
After a design is sketched, it is first welded into an intricate wire structure by talented jewellers in Bogotá.
These initial structures are then flown to Usiacuri, a small Colombian town, where a community of artisans begins to give shape and colour to each piece using ancestral techniques taught by their elders.
Each piece is handwoven and it takes around 1-2 working days to complete.
No machines, no mass production. Just true art, skill and attention to detail.
